Seeking Work-Life-Health Harmony: Using Ancient Ayurvedic Practice To Reach Alignment In Life & Health

Hi Reader,

This Weekly Habit it's all about reaching alignment in your life & health.

On this week's podcast episode we dive into the ancient health science of Ayurveda with special guest practitioner Gemma Randles. Gemma introduces us to what Ayurveda is and how you can use these principles to cultivate work-life-health-harmony.

Beginning by turning away from a 1 size fits all health & wellness model and instead viewing each of us as unique individuals in accordance with Ayurvedic practice.

Exploring the pro's and con's of ancient Vs modern medicine. It gets a little spicy as we confront some real truths about how healthcare delivery on both sides of the USA:UK pond is really struggling to provide for so many people's health needs in 2023.

This week's blog considers the benefits of listening to gut instincts when we're not in work-life alignment. and 'doing a 180'. As both Gemma and I did in our 20's by jumping on a plane to go find our purpose and to feel aligned with our life choices.

Alignment is strongly linked with purpose and I share some Health Habit Hacks for How to Create Alignment if you get that sinking feeling that you're not in the right place; each day at work, in that relationship or meeting up with a certain friend etc.

Prepare yourself to explore your own predominance and whether you're in alignment. The question is Are you sitting comfortably?

Then Let's begin...

But, quickly before we start...

1. Harmony In Life & Health Is All About Alignment

This week on The health Habits Podcast: 'Cultivating Work-Life-Health Balance': Ayurveda for Modern Well-being with the incredibly funny & interesting Guest star practitioner Gemma Randles - LISTEN HERE

If you've heard the word Ayurveda, but don't want to admit that you're not sure what it's all about, then you can't miss this introduction to Ayurveda.

Gemma Randles of Chikitsa.co.uk helps us all get to know the core principles of Ayurveda and how it might be able to help you, your life and your wellbeing.

Gemma has a unique insight into being a health & wellness practitioner as she is formally trained as a western medical practitioner as a Radiographer. But then realising she was out of alignment she retired and took her pension out at 24!

A calling took her travelling to India, South America, where she gained insight into indigenous peoples and their traditions. How such people are still very connected to the earth, nature and the medicinal properties of plants.

"Indigenous People live their lives connected with the land, with nature and with the medicinal properties of plants"

Gemma Randles

Gemma returned to the London, UK to study at The Ayurveda Institute and gained her certification under the guidance of eminent Ayurvedic experts in the field. Both in the UK and In India.

So do listen in to the episode to hear:

  • What is Ayurveda?
  • What are the Dosha's and how to help you identify your potential Dosha Pre-Dominance (your natural tendency) and how they shift and change with life events (hence always needing to balance & re-balance).
  • How Ayurveda believes in each human being as a unique person, with their specific health journey that shifts as we age.
  • The strengths & weaknesses of western medicine and Ayurvedic ways.
  • How Ayurveda practices (health habits)can help support relief of Mental Health issues.
  • The role of balance & daily routines (habit stacking) for creating better health.

"Ayurveda Is Ancient, a 5,000 year old Indian Science on How we can Live in Harmony in Nature & with Ourselves.."

Gemma Randles

Ayurveda wisdom states that man is a microcosm of the universe, encapsulating the 5 elements: Earth - Space/Ether - Fire - Water - Air.

That each individual is uniquely made up of these 5 elements in differing amounts. The ratio of 1 element to another is expressed by describing 'Dosha" and having a 'Predominance' of 1 of the 3 Dosha's:

  1. Vata - Space & Air: Governs Movement
  2. Pitta - (Fire & Water) Regulates Metabolism
  3. Kapha - (Earth & Water) Manages Assimilation in the Body

"We all have a predominance and a balance - but our lifestyles and habits can change the balance of the 5 elements and the experience of our health"

Gemma Randles

We talk about the importance of the patient, client, person being willing and engaged in their own health journey. By adhering to treatments, being consistent with their effort to change habits - whether the medicine is western or Ayurvedic.

Ayurveda Versus Western Medicine:

Ayurveda Vs Western

Root Cause NOT Band-Aid

Holistic NOT Silver Bullet

Compounding NOT Quick Fix

Individual NOT 1 Size Fits All

Ancient & Old NOT Modern & Latest

Patient is Expert NOT Dr is Expert

"When we're not connected to ourselves, we don't identify the root cause, the early symptoms, the problem builds ...we put the lid on...we put the lid on...until it's too much to handle and then the health issue is a lot more complicated to solve"

Gemma Randles

Why not explore your health landscape - as I talked about in last week's Weekly Habit. Map your Dosha's, know your predominance in your current phase of your life and restore balance by seeking alignment.

2. 'Doing a 180': Exit Your Rat Race & Seek Alignment Instead

This week's Blog article 'Doing A 180: Exit Your Rat Race With These Life Aligning Hacks' gets into that sticky topic of feeling like you're in the wrong place or doing the wrong thing with this precious life of yours. That being out of alignment with your life is being out of alignment with yourself and your health.

"The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you're still a rat. ..."

Unknown

The blog post uncovers what doing a 180 is all about? Inspired by Gemma 'retiring & withdrawing my pension at 24!" and my own version back in 1994, when as a 22 year old Shropshire village girl, I bought a one-way ticket to Beijing - Adios Amigos!!

The point is not about jumping on a plane - though if that's calling, I would encourage anyone to follow their instincts. No the point is what is going on in a person's life before they do a 180?

What is feeling so off? So wrong? That you can't do it anymore?

  • Is it eating unhealthy foods and feeling sick of your own diet?
  • Is it feeling dog tired? Tired of being Tired?
  • Is it feeling like an imposter at work because you have to talk as though you like your job when you don't?
  • Is it leaving after time spent with friends feeling depleted?

There are so many ways we can feel out of alignment, out of sink and if it builds enough a 180 can be the demonstration of your 'tipping-point' to the whole world.

"Do Something Different ... Change is Needed To Re-Align With Your Life & Health"

Clare George

Alignment Is Strongly Linked With Purpose, Passion & Your Energy:

Listening to gut instincts (remember the gut is the 2nd brain) and the whole innate messaging system built within each of us that we can tap into. This allows you to experience your innate wisdom. Your gut informs your senses - your senses are your gateway to balance.

"Mis-alignment appears to you, like a whisper... to about-turn, even when there is no logical explanation for your new actions"

Clare George

Last week we talked about the 5 innate senses, but this is more about your 6th sense: An intuitive faculty, proprioception, allows us to keep track of where our body parts are in space

5 Habit Hacks To Help You Create Alignment For a Healthier Life

1.Know Thyself: Get super familiar with your true values, beliefs and what is actually important to you?

3.Create Balance across your Work-Life-Health by giving attention and core resources equally.

4.Surround yourself with people that uplift you, that support and encourage you.

5.Draft a purpose statement.

In 2019, I began my life as an Empty-Nester. In 2020 when the pandemic hit, I did a deep-dive into what I felt my purpose was? By the start of 2021, I took it to a whole new level with Brita Fernandez Schmidt Book 'From Fears to Fierce" A woman's guide to owning her power.

My Purpose Statement:

"Love - Growth - Compassion"

Clare George

  • Love - To find and feel love & joy in my actions each & every day
  • Growth - 'Development Is All' - Create, Nurture and prove what's possible
  • Compassion - To care and contribute towards the unmet needs of others, leaving an imprint, a legacy of who I am and what I'm here for.

I then used my purpose statement as a 'model' to use each day, choice, decision: I ask myself:

Is this in alignment with my purpose statement?

Yes - I do it, without fear or worry, because I will never have regrets if my actions are in alignment.

No - Then it cannot take place; even if I desire it for a short-term pleasure or ego trip, or if other people wish it to be so.

Sometimes we wander from our path, but our instincts are there to help guide us. Be intuitive, seek your purpose and find a clear framework from your own purpose statement to follow, that helps you have alignment and the very core of a Healthy Life.
